Though I’ve officially retired my guitar repair service, I occasionally accept requests from friends and take on jobs I find especially meaningful. I recently agreed to take on a repair at the behest of a dear friend who introduced me to a most extraordinary gentleman. It was an honor and a pleasure to meet Don Herold accompanied by his son Jordi Herold, co-founder of Northampton’s Iron Horse Music Hall. At 96, Don is a wonder and an inspiration. Having grown up in Flatbush, Brooklyn near Ebbet’s Field , the home of my beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, his account of meeting the great Pee Wee Reese, the captain of the team, made my eyes open wide with amazement. A video on Jordi’s iphone of Don’s recent ascent to the top of the 252 foot tall Pilgram Tower in Provincetown Massachusetts, another town that once was home to me, was an extraordinary sight to behold. Though retired from teaching for fifty years, he continues to share his wise and cheerful outlook on life. His generous appreciation of the work I performed on his 1920’s parlor guitar was heartfelt and very satisfying. It was a unique privilege to have been of service to such a fine man. I’m grateful for having met Don and truly feel blessed with his respect and friendship.
